New Bintley ballet to premiere in Japan
February 11, 2008
David Bintley has spoken about his forthcoming new production of Aladdin, being created for the Japanese Ballet.
'I first went there just over two years ago and staged Carmina burana, and since that time we've been looking for something that we can work on again together', he revealed last week. 'In parallel with the work that I did with Carl Davis [pictured] on last year's new Cyrano score, my interest has grown in an older piece of his, Aladdin, a full-length ballet. While not a tremendous success when it had its original premiere, I think it is a terrific score and very thrilling for me and something which seems to chime with what the ballet of the New National Theatre in Japan want, so I'm very excited about that.'
Speaking of his progress on the ballet, David explained fully: 'It's 90% designed, and the score is finished. I've reworked some of it, made some cuts and had some new music composed by Carl. It's cast, and I've made about ten minutes of choreography. And I go back out there for most of April and that's when I hope to get the bulk of the work done. Then it opens in November - November 15 – get your tickets now!'
