Countdown...
13 days to go
During the 2005/06 season, BRB performed in 13 different venues in the UK, with 16 different ballets.
As well as performing at the Company's home, Birmingham Hippodrome, BRB also does a lot of touring. The Company has several regular tour venues, which normally receive two visits per year, these include The Lowry in Salford, near Manchester, the Sunderland Empire Theatre, the Plymouth Theatre Royal. Other venues that are occasionally visited, perhaps once a year or bi-annually include Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford, the New Theatre in Oxford.
All of these venues are in England. Cross-boarder touring to Wales (the Cardiff Millennium Centre) and Scotland (the Edinburgh Festival Theatre) requires special funding from Arts Council England. BRB visited Cardiff in June 2006 and makes regular, though infrequent, visits to Edinburgh.
All of these theatres are large venues, seating something in the order of 2000 people each. However, each year the Company also splits in two to take smaller ballets to smaller theatres. These 'North' and 'South' tours take place in the spring or summer of each year and normally encompass six to eight venues in two weeks! Last year these tours included visits to Durham, York, Sheffield, Grimsby, Poole, Truro and Exeter.
BRB also tours abroad. These tours are complicated and expensive to organise, but after hugely successful performances at the Met in New York at the Lincoln Centre's 2004 festival celebrating 100 years since the birth or choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton, the Company as toured to Hamburg and Hong Kong, with more foreign tours in the planning.
