BRB to feature in series of Channel 4 documentaries during the autumn

Fans of Birmingham Royal Ballet will be able to see a lot more of their favourite ballet company this autumn on Channel 4. The Company is to feature in a series of documentaries to be shown on Channel 4. Entitled Ballet Changed My Life: Ballet Hoo! the documentaries follow several hundred young people from across the West Midlands as they embark upon the challenge of a lifetime.

Young people from some of the most disadvantaged areas of the West Midlands have been set the task of performing Kenneth MacMillan’s acclaimed production of Romeo and Juliet. They will perform on stage at the Birmingham Hippodrome in front of a packed audience, with professional dancers from Birmingham Royal Ballet, accompanied by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

During the past 18 months, Birmingham Royal Ballet has worked with local authorities from Sandwell, Dudley, Wolverhampton and Birmingham and Youth at Risk, a charity that specialises in the care and rehabilitation of disadvantaged young people, in helping those involved in the project gain a greater understanding of their lives. Personal development training sessions given by Youth at Risk have been held throughout the project, aiming to inspire the participants to turn their lives around and discover whether they can influence their own futures through the challenging and intense discipline of ballet.

Every move, moan and milestone has been captured by the cameras and has been turned into a four-part documentary series to be broadcast this autumn, culminating in the transmission of their live performance.

Birmingham Royal Ballet will also feature in a series of 3 Minute Wonder on Channel 4 where viewers will get a behind-the-scene look at BRB’s wardrobe, wig and shoe departments and The Jerwood Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Dance Injuries.

Both the Ballet Changed My Life: Ballet Hoo! and the 3 Minute Wonder series are made by Diverse Productions for Channel 4. Diverse Productions were responsible for the award-winning Operatunity and Musicality which opened up the worlds of Opera and Musical Theatre to a wider audience.
