Curtain falls on most successful Nutcracker yetDecember 14, 2006 Birmingham Royal Ballet's 2006 season of The Nutcracker came to a close on Wednesday 13 December, with the final performance of the Christmas family favourite. The season was the most successful yet, with nearly 40,000 people walking through the Birmingham Hippodrome main doors over the three weeks of shows. The run saw a multitude of dancers taking on new roles, with Drosselmeyer debuts, first-time fairies (Snow, Rose and Sugar Plum!) and Nutcracker Prince premieres. Another highlight of the season was the Gala performance on 25 November in celebration of the 80th birthday of Nutcracker creator and BRB Director Laureate, Sir Peter Wright. The evening was a huge success, with the production concluding with Sir Peter joining the dancers on stage for the curtain call, at which point the Royal Ballet Sinfonia led the audience through a recital of 'Happy Birthday'. Sir Peter, who led the Company when it moved from London to Birmingham in 1990, later expressed his gratitude to all involved. 'It was magnificent', he said, 'you made me very happy indeed. 80 doesn't seem nearly so hard after that fabulous night!' The Company now go into rehearsals for the Spring season, preparing for the debut performances of BRB Director David Bintley's new ballet, Cyrano, and the next part of the ongoing tribute to the infamous composer, Stravinsky! a Celebration 2007. Tickets for both shows are now on sale, with performances in Birmingham, Salford, Plymouth and Sunderland, and additional Cyrano dates in Oxford.
