Cyrano: setting the scene
December 29, 2006
David Bintley has revealed that his new production of Cyrano will begin with the curtain already raised, with a short sequence taking place on stage as the audience take their seats.
The ballet begins with a scene showing many of the characters arriving at a theatre performance. As the audience for the ballet enter the auditorium, the characters on the stage will likewise take their seats for this 'play within a play'.
'We’re starting it quite unusually, in that when the audiences comes in, they’ll see a kind of ambiently lit set', said David Bintley recently. 'The idea is that as the audience for the ballet arrives, so too the audience for the performance on stage arrives. The orchestra begins at the advertised time, but all of the other timings of our show begin ten minutes earlier. So I’m going to direct, rather than choreograph, a ten-minute sequence of people arriving, with people getting ready for the performance, buying drinks, buying cushions to sit on finding places to sit. There will be nothing that you will miss if you have missed this sequence, it’s not intended that the real audience are already seated to watch all this, it’s just to create a feeling'.
