The show must go on!February 16, 2007 The Company's Friday 9 February performance of Cyrano in Birmingham narrowly avoided cancellation, thanks to the efforts of the performers both on the stage and in the orchestra pit, and the staff behind the scenes at Birmingham Royal Ballet and Birmingham Hippodrome. Heavy snow across the region over the 48 hours leading up to the performance had made the city largely inaccessible to audience members and performers alike. As a result, when the time came for curtain up, only approximately 200 patrons had made it to the venue, along with half of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. A number of dancers had also been claimed victim by the weather and ensuing gridlock throughout the city. Despite this, Birmingham Royal Ballet's Director David Bintley took to the stage after a delayed start to announce that the show would in fact go on, with the score rapidly adapted for a chamber-sized orchestra and many dancers taking on last minute role changes. Those held up in the snow did not give up either, and as the performance progressed the orchestra swelled to its usual size and the crowd scenes in the ballet gradually became more crowded! Patrons who were delayed, or who missed the ballet altogether were offered replacement seats at the following day's performances, although those that did make the show that night more than made up for their diminished numbers during the applause at the curtain call. David Bintley and Birmingham Royal Ballet's Chief Executive Christopher Barron led Birmingham Royal Ballet's senior management team in congratulating the entire company, praising the decisions made on the day and the communication with the venue staff which enabled the performance to continue. Cyrano now tours the UK, with dates in Salford, Plymouth, Sunderland and Oxford. Click here for full details and links to on-line booking. ENDS |
