Iain Mackay and Silvia Jimenez to leave
Birmingham Royal Ballet after
Swan Lake season
Birmingham Royal Ballet Principal Dancer Iain Mackay and First Soloist Silvia Jimenez have announced that they will be leaving the Company in April, at the end of the current
Swan Lake season. The dancers, who were married last year, are to move to Madrid.
Following their departure from Birmingham Royal Ballet, Iain will join Angel Corella's new Company, Ballet de España, as a Principal and Sylvia will retire from performing.
Born in Glasgow, Iain Mackay trained as a Junior Associate of Scottish Ballet, before joining the Dance School of Scotland. He spent two years at the Royal Ballet Upper School and joined the Company in 1999, being promoted to Soloist in 2001 and Principal in 2003. He has created a number of roles in the Company's current repertory, notably works by Director David Bintley, who recently described Iain as 'one of the most important young male dancers with the Company of the last ten years'. Iain recently partnered Miyako Yoshida in
Coppélia during the Company’s tour of Japan in January 2008.
Born in Spain, Silvia Jimenez began her dance training at the Victor Ullate School in Madrid. She joined Stuttgart Ballet in 1992 before joining Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1996. Her repertory includes Odette/Odile (
Swan Lake), Snow Fairy and Sugar Plum Fairy (
The Nutcracker) and Fortuna (
Carmina burana). She has created roles in David Bintley's
Nutcracker Sweeties (Kandy Cane) and
Beauty and the Beast (Vanité).
