Young and old unite at Easter
01 April 2008
People within the Billesley area of Birmingham will be brought together this week in a cross generational project based upon
Swan Lake.
The project began during the February half term at the Warstock Community Centre when Birmingham Royal Ballet dance artist, Gareth Griffiths, worked with youngsters taking part on the playscheme. Using themes and ideas from
Swan Lake, the young people created their own version of the classic production.
The Dark Horse Venture Ladies Group, also based in the area, had the opportunity to watch the performance piece back in February and has worked for the last two months creating costumes and props for the production. To help them in their task, they have worked with Birmingham Royal Ballet's Technical and Wardrobe Departments, receiving insight talks and costume and prop demonstrations from members of staff.
The project will end with two full days on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 April, where the costumes will be fitted on the children and any final alterations will be made. A performance combining the talents of the young dancers and the skill of the costume makers will take place on Wednesday 2 April for family and friends.
The project has been organised as part of The Arts Champions Scheme. Since 2006, Birmingham Royal Ballet has worked within the Selly Oak area of the city, developing a number of arts activities that make a difference to communities.
