Barry Wordsworth leaves Birmingham Royal Ballet
18 July 2008
Birmingham Royal Ballet's Music Director Barry Wordsworth leaves his post with the Company at the end of the 2007-08 season. He will take up the role of
Musical Director at the Royal Opera House in the autumn.
Barry has conducted the Royal Ballet Sinfonia for a quarter of a century, leading them in countless performances and a wide range of recordings. He was
appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in 1989, and is Principal Conductor of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. He was awarded the
1994 Evening Standard Award for his outstanding creative contribution to ballet and in June 2004 received an honorary doctorate from the University of
Central England.
John Beadle, Orchestra Director for Birmingham Royal Ballet, offered his warm wishes for the future, saying: 'The 2007-08 season has, as ever, been a
fantastically strong year for the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, and Barry has obviously been an integral part of that. The performances of all musicians at the
Desmond Kelly Gala matched both the dancing on stage and the emotion of the evening overall. Musically the whole year has been a real high for him to go out
on.
'I am sure that everyone at Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia will join with me in congratulating Barry on another excellent season, and
on his new appointment at the Royal Opera House, and in wishing him all the very best for the future.'
