Company invites first-time attenders for free

06 October 2008

The performance of Russian Steps by Birmingham Royal Ballet on Wednesday 8 October at Birmingham Hippodrome will be watched by an audience of first-time ballet attenders who will not have paid a penny for their tickets.

In order to ensure that the Company continues to engage with a diverse range of the city’s population, Birmingham Royal Ballet has invited many local community groups to attend the performance, entitled Proud to be in Birmingham, free of charge. Local school children, teachers, Housing Associations, Birmingham City Council Youth Services, participants on The Big Picture Project and local charities have all been invited alongside representatives from those communities who traditionally do not attend ballet.

Christopher Barron, Birmingham Royal Ballet's Chief Executive said:

'Birmingham Royal Ballet has been based in the city for nearly 20 years and during that time the Company has enjoyed the support of local government, businesses and people. However, there are many in the city who may not know about us or what we do, or have never thought about coming to watch us perform. The Proud to be in Birmingham event is a fantastic opportunity for us to show people exactly what we are about.'

It is hoped that the evening will create a market place for its work amongst as wide and varied audience as possible to demonstrate that ballet is an art form for all to enjoy and that the Company is accessible to all parts of the population.

Russian Steps consists of three short ballets by some of the greatest Russian composers and highlights the versatility of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s dancers.
