Firebird sets off smoke alarm
October 22, 2008
A performance of Stravinsky: a Celebration was halted last night in Cardiff after the auditorium had to be evacuated. Fire alarms at the Wales Millennium Centre were triggered during the opening of The Firebird, the third one-act ballet being presented that evening.
As all in attendance waited patiently outside, including cast members still in full costume and make-up, fire officials entered the venue to check on the source of the problem. They later confirmed that it had been a false alarm, and that nobody had been harmed. The show was unable to restart, however, as the alarms could not be restarted. The venue is currently carrying out an investigation into the incident.
Representatives from the Wales Millennium Centre and Birmingham Royal Ballet praised everyone involved for their swift responses to the evacuation, and thanked audience members for their calmness and patience.
Ticket holders dissatisfied with last night's performance should contact the Wales Millennium Centre box office on 08700 40 2000.
