Masefield Youth Centre project

Selly Oak, 2007-10

The Department for Learning ran six consecutive workshops at Masefield Community Centre, led by two dance artists. The workshops targeted two different age groups: a playscheme, for five- to ten-year-olds; and a youth group, for 11- to 16-year-olds.

The playscheme workshops were based on Romeo and Juliet and called ‘Battles to Ballroom’, and the older group's workshops were called ‘In the Bin – Conflict and Resolution’.

A total of 19 children were involved in the playscheme and 20 children were involved in the youth group workshops.

‘As with the project in February enthusiasm from the younger children was again high. There was also a good attendance from the parents/ guardians and friends for the final performance.’

‘What was a real bonus was the number of young men who took part in the final workshop. Everyone said there were a number of talented dancers in the group as it evolved from predominantly female group to a male one.’
