Ballet on the buses
May 23, 2007
Ballet on the Buses is the first collaboration between Birmingham Royal Ballet and Fierce! An old Routemaster bus has been transformed into a portable stage which will be driven to schools, community centres and other public spaces across Birmingham next week. Five Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers are taking part: Jonathan Caguioa, Aaron Robison, Sonia Aguilar, Carrie Johnson and Nathaneal Skelton.
The bus will stop at various Birmingham locations to present a series of free 10-minute performances exploring both the dimensions of the bus and the possibilities of experimental dance, especially created by local choreographer, Rosie Kay. Rosie last worked with Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2005, as part of The Planets, where different contributors provided steps to each of the movements of Holst's famous suite.
Thursday 24 May will see the Routemaster stop at Victoria Square at 4pm and outside of the Hippodrome on Friday 25 May at 4.30pm. The performances are part of the Fierce! festival, a month-long event now in its 10th year, that brings live art to the Midlands and presents it outside of traditional spaces.
