Christopher Barron on the end of the season
13 July 2010
Christopher Barron, Birmingham Royal Ballet's Chief Executive, has spoken of some of the Company's successes over the past 12 months.
'The 2009-10 season finishes in a whirl,' he said, before adding: 'or twirl! It’s been a magnificent season that has seen the Company celebrate its 20th Anniversary in Birmingham giving more performances of more ballets.
'The season was highlighted right away by the electrifying success of David's E=mc² and the subsequent South Bank Award, followed by 'the best gala we've ever seen' (to quote many members of the audience). The Royal Gala in February, graciously attended by
HRH The Prince of Wales and Lady Sarah Chatto, was designed to show off the Company's 20 years in the city. The programme was created internally using only the Company's dancers and technical expertise – all the historic and current video work was engineered in-house using newly gained expertise and equipment. This is no backward looking ballet company!'
Concluding a season that celebrated the move to the Midlands two decades ago, Christopher commented: 'The 20 years of success in
making Birmingham Royal Ballet a strong and independent company is all-important as we respond to future challenges. The community base in Birmingham and the construction of a ballet business in the city provides a strong environment to work in. I also believe strongly that challenge and adversity bring about new, often better, solutions and ideas.'
'We have seen some wonderful debuts in a year that has again confirmed the creative depth of Birmingham Royal Ballet. The Company now
deserves its annual rest before plunging into the exciting year ahead and our biggest ever investment, the new production of Cinderella.'
