Company tour Japan 2008

Birmingham Royal Ballet's tour of Japan in 2008

In January 2008 Birmingham Royal Ballet travels to Japan to perform two full-length ballets, David Bintley's Beauty and the Beast and Sir Peter Wright's production of Coppélia. This tour marks Birmingham Royal Ballet’s first visit to Japan since 1995. On this occasion the Company performed Swan Lake and Coppélia.

David Bintley's Beauty and the Beast world-premiered at the Birmingham Hippodrome in December 2003. The ballet tells the classic fairytale story of passion and prejudice as the beautiful Belle journeys to meet her beastly captor and discovers for herself the meaning of true love.

Coppélia tells the light-hearted story of young lovers Franz and Swanilda and their adventures with the eccentric toymaker, Dr Coppélius. When a strange and beautiful girl appears on the balcony of Dr Coppélius's house, no one is more intrigued than local girl Swanilda – except her lover Franz. As the characters gather inside his fantastical toy factory, the toy-maker’s ultimate dream comes true and Coppélia comes to life... or does she?

Coppélia Nishinomiya 11 January 2008 Tokyo 14 – 17 January 2008

Miyako Yoshida will perform the role of Swanilda in Coppélia for three performances in Tokyo. Miyako is a Principal Guest Artist of The Royal Ballet. Born and trained in Tokyo, she won the Prix de Lausanne in 1983. In 1984 she joined then Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, now Birmingham Royal Ballet where in 1988 she was promoted to principal.
