Dynamic Dance designersMay 14, 2007 Students from the University of Central England are working alongside BRB dancers on designs for a forthcoming programme of new works by members of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Dynamic Dance, Birmingham Hippodrome, 2 - 3 June 2007, features eight brand-new works choreographed by dancers from the Company. Sets and costumes are being contributed by students in Theatrical Presentation and Design at UCE, with the single exception of Kit Holder's Small Worlds, the sets and costumes for which are being created by Helen Fownes-Davies. Helen is already a professional theatrical designer, who recently created additional costumes for the Ballet Hoo! production of Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet. The students involved met with the dancers creating the new works some months ago, and after discussing initial ideas, the dancers selected which designers they had decided to continue working with. The collaborations have been confirmed as follows: Kit Holder is working with Helen Fownes-Davies Samara Downs is working with Samantha Kipling Aonghus Hoole is working with Lynsey Jackson Jenny Murphy is working with Lynsey Jackson Glyn Scott is working with Jemima Bruntlett Nathanael Skelton is working with Chloe Gamby Kosuke Yamamoto is working with Elle Harris In addition, Julie Bernard and Sharon Kilhams are providing designes for a newly confirmed collaborative piece, Danses Concertantes that is being choreographed by Kosuke Yamamoto, Jenny Murphy, Aonghus Hoole, Glyn Scott, Nathanael Skelton and Kit Holder. The performances aim to provide a showcase for the existing creativity within the Company, as well as allowing the dancers to develop their choreographic skills. Likewise, the design collaborations are intended to do the same for the students involved, with all work counting towards their degrees. Jemima Bruntlett said 'I feel thrilled to have been given this opportunity of working with Glyn at the BRB, I am hoping to achieve a greater understanding of costume and design for my future career as a designer'. Elle Harris, from Knowle, said of working on Danses Concertantes: 'To be honest I'm still wondering if I didn't dream this whole scenario up, designing costumes for the BRB was a childhood aspiration of mine so if you see a women pinching herself don't be alarmed!' Lynsey Jackson, working on two seperate pieces with Aonghus Hoole and Jenny Murphy, said of working with the two different designers: 'Aongus has a very similar vision for the piece as I do and feeds off my designs to suggest more ways we could improve them. I think we're both really happy with how its going at the moment. Jenny has a very strong idea of how she wants her different dancers to look, so my original design has developed into four separate costumes that will hopefully look great together on stage with the choreography.' All tickets for the performances cost just £10, and are available now either on-line through www.birminghamhippodrome.com, or by phoning ticket sales on 0870 730 1234.
