An Evening of Music and Dance at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Friday 4 February 201110 January 2011 Presented by David Bintley CBETown Hall & Symphony Hall Box Office: 0121 780 3333 or visit www.thsh.co.uk For one performance only, Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to Symphony Hall Birmingham, one of the world’s finest concert halls, for An Evening of Music and Dance on Friday 4 February 2011 at 7.30pm. The evening will be introduced by David Bintley, CBE, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Director, world-renowned choreographer and winner of the 2010 ITV South Bank Show Dance Award. It will include excerpts from Birmingham Royal Ballet’s and The Royal Ballet Sinfonia’s diverse repertory as the company and orchestra continue to celebrate its success in the City of Birmingham, nationally and internationally. Under the baton of Principal Conductor Paul Murphy, The Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Britain's busiest ballet orchestra will perform music highlights from celebrated composers including Lambert, Saint-Saëns, Delius, Walton, Coates, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky. Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers will perform short excerpts from the Company’s repertory including La Fille mal gardée (which will be performed in its full entirety later in the current season at Birmingham Hippodrome), Hobson’s Choice, The Dream and Aladdin. Company Director David Bintley choreographed Aladdin - to the specially commissioned score by Carl Davis - for the New National Theatre Ballet Company in Tokyo that premiered in Japan in autumn 2008. An Evening of Music and Dance will also feature a guest appearance from students of Elmhurst School for Dance in a new, specially choreographed work with music by Malcolm Arnold. The Sinfonia also plays frequently for The Royal Ballet and many of the world's other leading ballet companies, including regular performances with The Royal Ballet, as well as Paris Opéra Ballet, New York City Ballet, Australian Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Kirov, Norwegian Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and La Scala Ballet. Concert performances at the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, Birmingham's Symphony Hall and other major British venues also form a regular part of the Sinfonia's work. The Sinfonia's opera performances include The Royal Opera's acclaimed production of Turandot at Wembley Arena. The Sinfonia's recordings include video soundtracks to Birmingham Royal Ballet's Nutcracker, Coppélia and Hobson's Choice and CDs of English string music, the Sullivan overtures, the film scores of Richard Addinsell, Far from the Madding Crowd and The Ealing Comedies, which won the 1998 Gramophone Award for best film music. The complete score of John McCabe's Edward II was released on CD by Hyperion in 2000, a special double CD, Tribute to Madam (ASV), a recording of the scores of four ballets by Ninette de Valois, was recorded and released in 2001, Tribute to Sir Fred (Sanctuary Classics), a recording of the scores of four ballets by Frederick Ashton to celebrate his centenary, was released in 2004, with a second volume in 2005.
