E=mc² nominated for South Bank Show Award in Dance
19 January 2010
E=mc² has been nominated for a South Bank Show Award in Dance. The one-act ballet was created by Birmingham Royal Ballet's Director David Bintley to an especially commissioned score by Matthew Hindson.
It was premiered at Birmingham Hippodrome as part of the Quantum Leaps programme in autumn 2009, and subsequently toured the UK to both critical and audience acclaim.
Birmingham Royal Ballet's Chief Executive Christopher Barron said: 'With 2010 being the year of our 20th anniversary as Birmingham Royal Ballet, it is particularly meaningful that this nomination is for a brand-new work choreographed by our own Director, and which was created here in the city of Birmingham.
'At a time when we are reflecting on all that we have accomplished since our move to the Midlands, it is fantastic to have one of our most recent creative achievements recognised by the South Bank Show. It is with regret, however, that this ceremony will mark the end of a show that has played such a role in championing culture within the UK.'
The ceremony, marking the 14th and last-ever South Bank Show Awards, will be hosted by Melvyn Bragg on Tuesday 26 January. The event will be broadcast on ITV1 on Saturday 31 January.
