Communicate Freely, Inspire Creativity

From 5 to 9 January 2009 the Learning team worked with a group of learning and physically disabled people and their carers and a group of teaching artists to create a dance piece inspired by Romeo and Juliet. The project provided opportunities for the young people to engage with dance and drama its creation and performance processes and for the teaching artists to enhance their skills and confidence in delivering dance/theatre workshops in a range of community settings.

During the workshops the group worked on a series of tasks based on the themes in Romeo and Juliet of families, identity, conflict and resolution. The final piece of 19 minutes was performed to an original score composed and performed by Andrew Kristy (Freelance Musician) inspired by the creative ideas of the group and developed throughout the workshops.

The final performance was attended by invited guests including Government Officials, The Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the Vice President of Amway China, as well as educators, arts practitioners, friends and families.

Supported by the Sino British Fellowship Trust, British Council, Kapok Theatre Company and Guangdong Modern Dance Company.

'The workshop was so inspiring. Actually, I’ve been engaging in education for years, but found it hard to get more progress recently. For me, the workshop was a really good new year gift and I am sure my life will begin. Thank you!'

'At first, I found it difficult to co-operate with the disabled people. They didn’t listen to me at all. But gradually I found it was my fault. I shouldn’t have forced them to listen to me. Rather, I should listen to their thoughts.'
