2011 international tour to Hong Kong

06 January 2011

Four performances of David Bintley's Hobson's Choice at the 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival

Birmingham Royal Ballet is delighted to return to Hong Kong and its 39th International Arts Festival in February 2011. Birmingham Royal Ballet will perform Hobsonís Choice, one of the companyís established favourites by Director David Bintley, at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, from 18 Ė 20 February 2011.

Birmingham Royal Balletís Hobson's Choice, a combination of a tender love-story, hilarious comedy and foot-tapping musical is based on Harold Brighouse's well-known play. The ballet tells the rags to riches tale of the humble boot-maker Will Mossop, whose talent could take him far, if only someone would push him in the right direction. The girl for the job is headstrong Maggie Hobson.

The story unfolds as Hayden Griffin's magnificent set and costume designs take the audience from a 19th century shop to a Victorian park, where the company dances to the music of composer Paul Reade. Lighting is by John B. Read.

The Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the Orchestra of Birmingham Royal Ballet, will play for the company's performances during the internationally-renowned festival.

The forthcoming 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival 2011 will be staged in 15 different venues over 39 days, from 17 February through to 27 March 2011. The festival will host more than 200 performances and related dance, music and theatre events, featuring 38 ensembles or solo artists from overseas and 16 from Hong Kong.

Birmingham Royal Balletís performances in Hong Kong will be part of a wider dance interest as this yearís festival with further performances from New York City Ballet, Tanztheater Wuppertal, Beijing Dance Theater and Momix, the dance-illusionist company.
