Jan Hofstra
Jan Hofstra was born in Leiden in 1935. He studied instrument building, electrical and radio engineering. From 1950 to 1961 he worked in the film industry, where he learnt about camera, studio and theatre techniques. From 1961 to 1964 he was chief technician on a major touring production. Since 1964 he has been working for Dutch National Ballet, where he is responsible for the technical organization and presentation of ballet performances. He has worked with Peter Wright
(Giselle), Hans van Manen (Bits and Pieces, Five Tangos, Grosse Fuge, Twilight), Rudi van Dantzig (Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet) and Toer van Schayk. He has designed the lighting for many of DNB's stagings of Balanchine's ballets. Since the Muziektheater was opened in September 1986, he spends much of his time as a lighting designer, often working with other companies when they present Van Manen's works.
