Oliver Smith
Born in 1918 in Wisconsin, Oliver Smith studied at Pennsylvania State University. His first design was for Massine's Saratoga. He designed scenery for de Mille's Rodeo, Johann Strauss's Rosalinda, with choreography by George Balanchine, Jerome
Robbins's Fancy Free, Balanchine's Waltz Academy, Robert Joffrey's The Nutcracker and many ballets for American Ballet Theatre including Robbins's Les Noces, Harbinger, Swan Lake, Giselle. On Broadway he designed and produced On the Town
and won Tony Awards for his designs for My Fair Lady, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Becket, Camelot, Hello Dolly! and Baker Street. He also designed the Hollywood movies The Band Wagon and Oklahoma! He died in 1994.
