Osbert Lancaster
The late Osbert Lancaster studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts. He was well known as a painter, cartoonist, author and designer working widely in theatre, opera and ballet. His designs include La Fille mal gardée
for The Royal Ballet, Coppélia and Pineapple Poll for SWRB (now BRB); Hotel Paradiso, Zulrika, Candide and All's Well that Ends Well for the theatre; The Rake's Progress (first British performance),
L'italiana in Algeri and Falstaff for Glyndebourne; Don Pasquale for the former Sadler's Wells Opera. He wrote numerous books, including two autobiographical volumes, and was cartoonist for the Daily Express from 1939, creating the famous Littlehampton family. He was knighted in 1975.
