Hayden Griffin
The British theatre designs of Hayden Griffin includes 30
world premieres, including plays by Bond, Osborne, Hare, Brenton,
Miller and Mamet, for the RNT (Plays & Players Award for The Madras
House), the RSC, Royal Court, Northcott Theatre, Exeter, Joint Stock
and in the West End. His opera designs include Falstaff and Parsifal
(Royal Opera), Orfeo (ENO) and Così fan tutte (Metropolitan Opera, New
York). He has worked extensively in Europe, including 16 productions for
Teatro di Genova, and in New York, Los Angeles and Australia. Among the
films he has designed are David Hare's Wetherby; Syrup for Channel 4
(2nd Jury Prize, Cannes, 1994; Academy Award nomination, 1995); Painted
Angels and Conquest in Canada; and, most recently, Patrice Chéreau's
Intimacy. 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café was his first collaboration
with David Bintley for whom he has designed Cyrano (Royal Ballet),
Hobson's Choice (SWRB), Job (San Francisco Ballet), Far from the Madding
Crowd and Giselle. For Birmingham Repertory Theatre, he designed
Jonathan Church's productions of Brighouse's original play Hobson's Choice
and The Diary of Anne Frank, Neil Birch's production of Brassed Off, Bill
Bryden's production of The Three Sisters and, most recently, Romeo and Juliet.
