PROLOGUE  |  ACT I  |  ACT II  |  ACT III  |  EPILOGUE

Troy's clothes are found by the coast and it is presumed he has drowned. Some months later, Boldwood, given new hope by Troy's death, accompanies Bathsheba to Greenhill Fair and extracts from her a promise to marry him in the new year. Gabriel recognizes Troy, who is playing 'Dick Turpin' in a sideshow.

As the preparations for his Christmas party are made, Boldwood dresses, excited by the prospect of his impending marriage to Bathsheba. Gabriel tries to tell him that Bathsheba's husband is still alive, but he is unable to speak to him. The celebrations start and the wedding announcement is made. Suddenly Troy arrives. Boldwood, in a state of complete distraction, shoots him dead.
