Patricia Neary
Born in Miami, Patricia Neary began her professional ballet career when she joined the National Ballet of Canada at the age of 14, making her the youngest and only American dancer in the Company. Three years later, she joined New York City Ballet, where she created leading roles in many of George Balanchine's
best-known works. Her repertory also included principal roles in ballets by Robbins, Tudor, Taras and Cunningham. In 1968, under Balanchine's guidance, she joined Geneva Ballet, where as well as dancing, she began staging Balanchine ballets in Europe. At the same time, she also performed as a guest with the Stuttgart,
Hamburg, Hanover and Berlin ballet companies. From 1970 to 1973, she was Assistant Director of the Berlin Ballet, from 1973 to 1978, she was Director of the Geneva Ballet, with Balanchine acting as Artistic Advisor. She has also been Artistic Director of the Zürich Ballet (1978-85) and the Ballet of La Scala, Milan (1985-7).
Since 1988, she has worked for the Balanchine Trust, staging over 30 works in 60 European and Far Eastern cities, as well as throughout the USA.
