Hong Kong, 2010
Birmingham Royal Ballet was invited to perform as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival 2011. The Company's Learning Department spent some time in Hong Kong in November 2010 on an associated project.
Each year the Hong Kong Arts Festival contributes towards local art education through the artists-in-residence (AIR) project. The project invites overseas and local artists to give talks and workshops. Principal Dancer Robert Parker, along with Director for Learning Pearl Chesterman and pianist Andrew Kristy, worked with 38 students from TWCHs Li Ka Shing college, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School, Elegantia College and two local artists, ballet dancer Chow Ho-Wan and pianist Ng Zee- lai Willy, to learn and rehearse excerpts of Birmingham Royal Ballet's Hobson's Choice.
Students showcased their work at three participating schools and shared what they had learnt. The students also performed their work at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Foyer on 20 February 2011. After the showcase the students were invited to take a tour backstage and meet Company artists before watching a performance.
The project increased students' knowledge of performing arts and provided a suitable environment so every participating student could comfortably interact with global artists. Students gained a better understanding of Birmingham Royal Ballet and the ballet Hobson's Choice, increased confidence, skills, and an understanding of different countries and cultures.
