For those with autism, a learning disability or sensory and communication difficulties

These performances are open to everyone, but are particularly intended for anyone who finds going to the theatre challenging, particularly those with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability or sensory and communication difficulties.

Beauty and the Beast will be adapted especially for these relaxed performances, including a shorter running time, changes to lighting and sound levels to avoid sensory overload, and a flexible seating plan with plenty of room to move around during the performance.

‘Everyone made us feel welcome’

One parent who took her two children to the relaxed performance of The Sleeping Beauty in 2018 commented: “You could tell the organisers had thought hard about how to make it work. There was no judgement at all, from anyone.

“From performances to ticket booth staff, everyone made us feel welcome. It was truly inclusive and being able to attend a performance like that means so much to families like ours.”

‘Formal theatre rules don’t apply’

As Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Director, David Bintley, said: “We want everyone to feel welcome at the ballet, which is why we’re so excited about our relaxed performances of Beauty and the Beast. “It’s a chance for family and friends to experience the magic of live performance together in an adapted environment where formal theatre rules don’t apply.

“We are proud to be working alongside our partners at Birmingham Hippodrome and Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on this exciting venture and can’t wait to welcome a brand-new audience to Birmingham Royal Ballet performances.”
