Join and Support / Ballet Now

A diverse gathering of industry experts has been brought together to select the Ballet Now artists and mentor them through the process from commissioning to opening night. The consortium will not only set the framework for the project and award commissions but they are also an integral part of the extensive mentoring process; making their own experience available to those taking part. 

The Creative Consortium are: 

David Bintley CBE is Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Director and principal choreographer. David has almost 40 years’ choreographic experience, often with commissioned scores, and has worked all over the world.

Alistair Spalding is Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Sadler’s Wells. Alistair has made Sadler’s Wells the world-leading dance house it is today, commissioning, producing and presenting more new dance work than any other theatre in the world.

Ted Brandsen is Director of Dutch National Ballet, a world-class company internationally recognised for its regular production of innovative new works. Ted also has 35 years’ experience as a choreographer.

Sally Beamish is an award-winning composer who has written over 200 works in her 25- year compositional career. In 2016, she went through the process of writing her first ballet score, The Tempest, in collaboration with David Bintley.

Sally Cavender is the Director of Performance Music and Vice-Chairman of the publishing house Faber Music. Sally has presided over the publication of over 950 new scores and was recently awarded the Lesley Boosey Award for her outstanding contribution to the furthering of contemporary music in Britain.

Koen Kessels is Music Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet, and holds senior positions with the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and HERMESensemble. He is a passionate advocate of new music.

Cassa Pancho is both founder and Artistic Director of Ballet Black, a company she created to provide role models for young black and Asian dancers.

Emma Southworth is the Senior Producer for The Royal Ballet and is responsible for curating the dance programme in the Linbury Theatre. She has worked with numerous young choreographers, composers and designers.
