During the October half term 2012, the Department for Learning worked in partnership with Wales Millennium Centre to deliver an exciting education project based around Swan Lake. This project was particularly exciting as it finished with a final performance by 51 young people on the main stage of Wales Millennium Centre following the Company performance of Swan Lake.
Over the course of eight days, lead artists Lee Fisher and Emma Breeze worked with young people from WMC’s Young Company and Fitzalan High School in Cardiff to devise their own performance piece inspired by Swan Lake entitled The Lake with original music provided by pianist Richard Syner.
The final performance, complete with full set and dry ice took place on Friday 2 November to rapturous applause from an audience of family, friends and invited guests. The project was funded through ACE Cross Border Touring Fund.
Following the show, parents gave their feedback at a special drinks reception:
'It was absolutely fantastic! Really beautifully done! We thoroughly enjoyed it. Some parts of it were quite outstanding and children even choreographed bits of it themselves!'Parent
'It was a really good experience, it will look really good on my CV and it's inspired us all to take up dance!'Pupil, Fitzalan High School
When asked what it was like on stage, one member of the Young Company simply said:
'It was awesome!'
