Interview

Meet Anna Monleon

"I was born in Barcelona and I initially started dancing at ten, but it was only at the age of 14 that I started to take it seriously and see it as a career. I was 17 when I moved to Birmingham to go to Elmhurst Upper School. It was in the second year that we increased our contact with the Company.

I remember that my first role was to dance in MacMillan’s Concerto, which was scary, but certainly in a good sense – I only had ten days to learn my role.

My involvement with the Company grew after that and I was a cover for Cinderella in 2010 but, unfortunately, I didn’t get the opportunity to dance. Moving into my third year, I spent more time at Birmingham Royal Ballet than I did at Elmhurst.

The Company was extremely supportive. Marion Tait gave me a lot of advice about my pointe shoes and that helped enormously with my technique.

Spending so much time with the Company allowed me to show what I could do. David Bintley saw me dance several times and he offered me a contract.

Easing my way into Birmingham Royal Ballet before securing my contract made me aware of the challenges I would face when joining a professional company and it helped me to adapt quickly."
