The world of ballet can feel an unfamiliar, mysterious place to a newcomer. Our hour-long Introduction toCoppélia is specially designed to make new audiences feel at home, and encourage them to try something different.

Presented by storyteller Owen Young, An Introduction to Coppélia aims to break down any pre-conceived ideas that people might have about ballet and dancers in general, as well as explaining the story, backstage wizardry and key musical moments of Coppélia.

This performance will include an interview with the dancers playing the lead roles of Swanilda and Franz, the opportunity to see backstage crew putting the set together, an introduction to classical mime and a valuable insight into the role of the conductor. After brushing up on their ballet knowledge, the audience will enjoy Act II of Coppélia performed in all its glory by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s world-class dancers and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

An Introduction to Coppélia is aimed at audiences of all ages who are new to the world of ballet.
