This brand-new mixed bill, Lazuli Sky, includes the world premiere performances of Birmingham-born choreographer Will Tuckett's new ballet of the same name, alongside Liebestod, a powerful solo, and Our Waltzes by Venezuelan choreographer Vicente Nebrada.

The first one-act ballet commissioned and presented by Carlos Acosta as Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, Will Tuckett's Lazuli Sky is inspired by ideas of ‘social distancing’. Tuckett and his team, including designer Samuel Wyer and projection designer Nina Dunn, are creating a unique piece set to John Adams's Shaker Loops, which will be performed live by members of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Paul Murphy.

The deep, speckled blue of lapis lazuli was the base for the most precious and expensive of colours in the Renaissance painter’s palette, providing the clear sky blue so familiar in the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci. During lockdown, the creative team has been drawn to the open clarity of sky, wind-shaped landscapes, and birdsong, without the distractions of normal everyday living. These are the inspiration and backdrop to this outward looking, hopeful and regenerative ballet.

The programme also includes two other ballets new to Birmingham Royal Ballet's repertory. Valery Panov's Liebestod offers a powerful, visceral solo for the Company's male principals. Vicente Nebrada's Our Waltzes is danced to a collection of Latin-infused waltzes from his native Venezuela and features five couples in choreography that fills the stage with fluid movements, celebrating love, romance and passion.
