For Carlos Acosta’s first programme as Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet he curates a summer festival bringing together dancers, visual artists, writers and thinkers who inspire him today.
Carlos presents his first mixed bill of electrifying ballets for Birmingham Royal Ballet, showcasing the Company's dancers' technique, virtuosity and versatility.
The evening opens with one of the greatest ballerinas of our time, Alessandra Ferri, making a special guest appearance. Following ‘one of the remarkable comebacks in artistic history’ (The Times), Ferri dances with Acosta in a new duet created for the Company by Goyo Montero to form a new part of his ballet Chacona. A thrilling, physical piece set to electrifying music by Bach, played on violin, guitar and piano, Chacona receives its UK premiere here.
The programme also includes the world premiere performances of a work by Daniela Cardim, former dancer with Dutch National Ballet, and Emmy Award-winning composer Paul Englishby.
And the performance concludes with Balanchine’s virtuosic Theme and Variationsto music by Tchaikovsky, one of the most technically and musically complicated ballets.
Live music performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet's acclaimed orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
Immerse yourself in dance, music and more, as Acosta fills Sadler's Wells with performances, conversations with leading artists, writers and thinkers, and a choreographic robot. In the Lilian Baylis Studio, discover Conrad Shawcross’s Ada Project, where it dances in response to music by contemporary composers. Full details of the festival programme will be published in early 2020.
