When Clara’s toys come to life at the stroke of midnight, she embarks on a fantastical journey through a winter wonderland. Be whisked from the heart-warming Christmas Eve party where Fritz and Clara meet the magician Drosselmeyer, to the rousing battle between King Rat and the toy soldiers, through a flurry of Snowflakes to the Kingdom of Sweets, where Clara meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and her prince.
The production features Peter Wright’s award-winning choreography which was adapted by David Bintley for the acclaimed production at the Royal Albert Hall. For Christmas 2020, Birmingham Royal Ballet's Carlos Acosta and The REP’s Sean Foley created a special version of The Nutcracker. This new, 90-minute magical experience conjures up the most dazzling and enchanting moments from the timeless full-length show. It features the Snowflakes, Drosselmeyer, Fritz and Clara’s Christmas Eve party, King Rat’s battle, the Kingdom of Sweets dances from around the world, the iconic Sugar Plum Fairy and, of course, the Nutcracker Prince - all brought to life by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s world-class dancers, this enchanting spectacle features the Royal Ballet Sinfonia performing Tchaikovsky’s cherished score live.
Each Nutcracker season the Company is usually joined by graduate students from the Royal Ballet School and Elmhurst Ballet School, offering them the opportunity to dance with a professional company, which is a key part of all training for ballet students. WIth no live performances at the moment, the opportunities for student dancers were sadly limited, but working within the two covid-safe dancer ‘bubbles’ created for our The Nutcracker at The REP production, we were delighted to be able to welcome two students from The Royal Ballet School (taking on roles in the Arabian and Russian Dances) and students from Birmingham-based Elmhurst Ballet School, who performed the Snowflake scene.
Don't miss your chance to enjoy this reimagined family favourite from the comfort of your own home.
