Born in Queensland, Australia, Emily Smith trained with Tanya Pearson, the Vienna State Opera Ballet School and the Royal Ballet School. She has danced with The Royal Ballet, where her repertory included roles in Swan Lake, Cinderella and Giselle. She joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2011.
