Jean-Paul Vroom was born in The Hague in 1922 and studied at the Royal Academy there before leaving at 16 for Paris. The design for Becket’s Waiting for Godot was his first work for theatre. During the 1960s he became interested in photography and directed a number of films. His close collaboration with choreographer Hans van Manen is apparent in the many designs Vroom has made for his ballets over the years.
