German designer Jürgen Rose, who designed the costumes for Concerto, studied acting and painting in Berlin. He is particularly well known for his collaborations with choreographer John Cranko, creating his first designs for him at Stuttgart Ballet. His designs for Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet (1962) brought him renown, and he continued to design for most of Cranko’s ballets up until 1970, including Poème de l’extase, Onegin, Swan Lake, The Firebird, Daphnis et Chloë, Initialen R.B.M.E. and Spuren. Some of his other famous designs include those for Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto and for many of choreographers John Neumeier’s and Celia Franca’s works. Rose has also worked extensively for opera, including on both Un ballo in maschera and DieZauberflöte for The Royal Opera. His work also includes theatre credits and designs for the 1963 film Das schwarz-weiss-rote Himmelbett.
