Born: London

Studied: I studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. I was appointed to the Royal Ballet Sinfonia whilst in my final year at the college.

Favourite ballet to play: I enjoy working as a percussionist in a ballet orchestra as there is always a lot to play. Ballet also encompasses a large range of musical styles, and BRB have always been a leader in such diversity. I have many favourites. Musically, Romeo and Juliet and The Firebird are my favourites, but the most fun to play is probably ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café.

Why a percussionist? I used to sing and was told at school I had a good ear for music, and was offered free lessons if I agreed to start learning an instrument. After many discussions I chose drums, but soon realised that there were many other instruments in the percussion ‘family’, which really appealed to me.

What do you love about playing percussion? I love the diversity of musical styles that feature percussion, which is pretty much every type of music from across the world. I also very much enjoy the diversity of instruments that I have learned through the years, which originate from all continents.

Most challenging non-musical thing you have done: Probably flying a plane solo for the first time!

Interesting fact about you: In recent years I have also been working as a music producer, having produced a number of albums and tours in many different genres. This year I took up the position as Commercial Producer for the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, and am currently working on a number of projects that will feature the orchestra in years to come.
