Mathias made his Birmingham Royal Ballet debut with a new score for City of a Thousand Trades, part of the 2021 Curated by Carlos season.

Mathias Coppens is a Belgian pianist-composer based in Los Angeles, California. He studied at the Antwerp and Amsterdam Conservatoires and the University of Southern California’s Screen Scoring programme, recognised as one of the world’s finest for musical composition in visual media. Mathias is a freelance composer and orchestrator and has assisted Hollywood composer Aaron Zigman (The Notebook).

Mathias has performed as a Soloist with orchestras and in various chamber music formations. As a composer he has worked for many leading Belgian and Dutch ensembles/orchestras such as Opera Ballet Flanders, Symphony Orchestra of Flanders, Casco Phil, Hermes Ensemble among others. He has written the music for more than 20 films, selected for numerous festivals across the USA and Europe. He is, together with Michiel Delanghe, artistic leader of the ensemble deCompagnie.

He is currently a guest Professor at the Conservatory of Antwerp where he gives masterclasses in music for film and video games, and he has previously taught harmony and improvisation at the Luca School of Arts, Belgium.
