Matthew Lawrence

Born in New Zealand, Matthew Lawrence trained at the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. After graduating, he joined Australian Ballet where his repertory included the leading roles in Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, La Fille mal gardée, Coppélia,Graeme Murphy's Swan Lake, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty and works by many modern choreographic luminaries. Matthew joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2008 and the breadth of roles he has already performed have proved him a hugely versatile artist, with a personality that has already endeared him to the Company and its audiences. His repertory includes leading roles in Romeo and Juliet, Beauty and the Beast, Raymonda Act III and The Nutcracker. Matthew's talents are not just restricted to his abilities on stage. Recently he has become a frequent contributor to various leading dance periodicals, writing incisive and often amusing articles on dance related subjects. He and his wife, ex-Principal Gaylene Cummerfield, have also recently become the proud parents of Willow.
