Vera Pereira
Born: Portugal
Studied: I trained at the Royal Academy of Music and when my masters degree was finished I was wondering whether I should stay in London or go back to Portugal. When I got a trial for Principal Double Bass at the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, I took it as a sign that London was the place to be. When I got offered the job I jumped with joy!
Favourite ballet to play: Romeo and Juliet any day! It’s so much fun to play and, at the same time, is wonderfully emotional.
Why the double bass? I thought it looked mysterious and the low sounds it produced made me very curious!
Most challenging non-musical thing you have done: Paragliding over the Swiss Alps! Scary!
Alternative career: I have had so many different hobbies over the years that I think I would be happy doing lots of different things! But ultimately I would love to work with young children.
A person outside of the musical world who inspires you: My lovely children! They’re rays of sunshine and surprise me every day.
Interests outside of work: Yoga.
