Everyone at BRB was sad to hear of the death of Dame Beryl Grey over the weekend. She was one of Britain’s greatest ballerinas and an inspirational company director.

Dame Beryl Grey danced with Sadler's Wells Ballet (later Birmingham Royal Ballet) from 1941 to 1957 and later served as a member of BRB's Board in several capacities. She joined Sadler's Wells at just 14, and was affectionally known as Britain's 'Baby Ballerina'. In addition to working with some of the greatest names in ballet, she went on to achieve a number of firsts in her career, including being both the first British ballerina to dance with the Bolshoi in Moscow, and the first to perform in China. Later in her career she became a renowned Artistic Director of the London Festival Ballet (later English National Ballet).

In a statement, English National Ballet said she has a 'significant legacy' and she presented an 'immeasurable contribution to the art form.'

She dedicated her whole life to championing ballet and dance and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with her friends and family.
