Tell us about your role at Birmingham Royal Ballet.

My name is Yasiel Hodelin Bello, and I’m originally from Cuba. I have been dancing with BRB for two and a half years, and in October it will be three years since I joined the Company. Recently, I was delighted to be promoted to First Soloist ahead of the 2026-27 season, which has been a very proud and rewarding milestone in my career.

My days at work are focused on training, rehearsing, and performing at the highest level. A typical day starts around 8am before I head to the studio for daily ballet class, followed by rehearsals that usually continue until around 6.30pm. Ballet is both physically and mentally demanding, but I love the discipline, creativity, and teamwork that come with being part of such an inspiring company.

What has been a defining moment in your career?

One of the most defining moments of my career was recently performing the role of Basilio in Carlos Acosta’s Don Quixote. Growing up in Cuba, it was always a dream of mine to dance both the role and the ballet, so I was thrilled when BRB announced we would be performing and touring it this season. Bringing that dream to life on stage was a truly special experience and one I will never forget.

What do you love most about Birmingham?

Birmingham has become a place that feels like home to me. I love visiting places like Cow and Sow or Rodizio Rico in the city centre, where I can enjoy a nice meal and relax after a busy day of rehearsals. I also enjoy spending time at the Bullring, which has so many fantastic shops and a vibrant atmosphere that makes the city feel full of energy.

What makes Birmingham Royal Ballet's audiences so special?

Birmingham audiences are wonderfully supportive and welcoming. Every time I perform, I can feel the warmth and enthusiasm they bring into the theatre, which creates a special connection between the dancers and the audience. Their energy makes every performance even more enjoyable and helps make each show feel unique.

What would you say to someone who thinks ballet isn't for them?

I would encourage them to give ballet a chance and come to see a performance with an open mind. Ballet is much more than people often expect – it combines storytelling, music, athleticism, emotion, and artistry in a way that can be enjoyed by everyone. Even if you have never watched ballet before, you might be surprised by how moving, exciting, and relatable it can be.
