Here we take a look at Le Spectre de la rose – a pas de deux choreographed by the legendary Michel Fokine – performed as part of BRB2’s tour programme Carlos Acosta’s Ballet Celebration.
Premiered in 1911 with the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky in the role of the Rose, Le Spectre de la rose tells the story of a young girl who falls asleep after her first ball, still clutching the rose from her evening. As she dreams, the spirit of the rose appears, dancing with her in a moment suspended between reality and imagination before vanishing into the night.

Nijinsky’s role, created specifically for him, remains one of the most iconic in ballet history, renowned for its contrasting ethereal quality and virtuosic technical elements. For the first run of Carlos Acosta's Ballet Celebration in 2025, BRB2 dancers had the rare privilege of being coached by Isabelle Fokine, granddaughter of Michel Fokine, preserving an authentic lineage and offering unique insight into the choreographer’s original vision.
Carlos Acosta’s Ballet Celebration is a vibrant showcase of exceptional young talent, bringing together exciting performances inspired by a rich ballet heritage. Book your tickets now before they’re gone!
