Relaxed performances
These performances at Birmingham Hippodrome are open to all. Relaxed performances are different from the main show, created for people who may find coming to the theatre challenging. Adaptations are made front of house and to the staging to create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe and is able to enjoy the ballet. There is a relaxed approach to noise levels (voluntary and involuntary) in the auditorium.
Specific adaptations to performances change depending on the production, but may include:
- The show has been adapted to reduce the overall performance length.
- Members of the audience can walk in and out of the auditorium during the show if they want to.
- Some seats are left empty to give audience members space and make them feel more comfortable.
- Breakout spaces, with toys and colouring activities, are provided and can be used throughout the performance.
- The auditorium will not be as dark, we keep the lights on during the performance.
- Members of the cast will introduce the story and key characters at the beginning of the show; this introduction will include a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter.
- Members of Birmingham Hippodrome staff and volunteers will be wearing sparkly hats on the day and will be more than happy to assist you with whatever you need.
- Ear defenders, fidget toys and colour therapy glasses will be available for those who need them.
- We have Audio Description available for visually impaired audience members. (Speak to Ticket Sales before booking to secure your headset.)
