Thomas Jung has been appointed as the inaugural Constant Lambert Conducting Fellow with The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. Jung was awarded the fellowship following an extensive audition process, which included conducting a studio rehearsal with dancers from The Royal Ballet and an orchestra rehearsal of Stavinsky’s Jeu de Cartes with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
The Constant Lambert Fellowship is a two year programme working across both companies, which provides a tailor-made programme for conducting for ballet. The Fellowship is the first programme of its kind between these two companies after this model was successfully pioneered by Birmingham Royal Ballet and Rambert Dance Company in 2014 for the BBC Performing Arts Fund Fellowship Scheme. The Constant Lambert Fellowship includes cover conducting for specific Royal Ballet productions at the Royal Opera House and on tour with Birmingham Royal Ballet. The position also includes opportunities to gain experience conducting rehearsals, education projects, workshops and touring events, as well as mentoring from Koen Kessels, Music Director of The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet and Paul Murphy, Principal Conductor of Birmingham Royal Ballet.
During his time with The Royal Ballet, Jung will be working as the Assistant and Cover Conductor for The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, and Romeo and Juliet. With Birmingham Royal Ballet, he conducts La Fille Mal Gardeé, The Nutcracker, Beauty and the Beast and [Un]leashed, which includes the world premiere of Didy Veldman’s new work for the Company.
Jung commented: “It is a great privilege to work with the excellent musicians and conductors of both orchestras. Hands-on experience is what all young conductors need most, particularly when conducting for ballet. Learning from the dancers, choreographers and ballet masters of these world class ballet companies is extraordinary. — this fellowship means learning from the best.”.
Besides his new appointment, Thomas Jung is Assistant and Cover Conductor of Bernard Haitink. Jung is also Music Director of the Flora Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Chief Conductor of the Studio Orchestra Duisburg and Guest Conductor of the Tianjin Grand Opera Symphony Orchestra China. Thomas Jung was the 2015/16 season Zander Fellow and Assistant Conductor of both the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Jung studied at the Cologne Academy of Music and the University of Cambridge. He is the 2017 recipient of the Eugen Jochum Award for Conductors.
